This study examines the ways African-American authors in the 20$\sp{\rm th}$ century have used folklore and folk performance styles in their creative fiction. Specifically, the study traces the place of folklore and folkways in African-American authors' attempts to adopt, adapt, and expand modernist literary and philosophical traditions to articulate the relationship between African-American literary subjects in print and folk performance traditions (song, dance, oral narratives) which aren't written down.

African-American authors have drawn on both Euro-American modernist techniques and African-American folk and musical themes and styles to create an expanded version of modernist "underground" space. This space simultaneously draws on and weaves together different literary, cultural, and political inheritances: modernist literary inheritances such as Dostoevskian versions of individual "underground consciousness;" West-African derived religious notions of an intergenerational, communal "realm under the earth" where ancestors and spirits exist; and the social, cultural, and political nature of African-American experiences of various forms of segregation in which the community itself became a "communal underground." Many African-American authors were aware of how one, two, or all of these inheritances contribute to a context in which existential and social/cultural identities continue to intersect and relate in ways that are rare in "mainstream" existentialist and modernist literary traditions. The result is spatial definition and description of a strain of writing called Diasporic Modernism.
