This case study documents the implementation of a learning program in a manufacturing environment that allowed skilled craftsmen to advance their skills and education level at their own self-motivated pace. The idea for this innovative approach to professional development surfaced from the company craftsmen. They sought permission and support in learning new skills that would enable them to meet the increasing technological needs of the company in which they worked instead of the company relying on outside contractors or engineers to solve technical problems. This learning opportunity provided an opportunity for the skilled craftsmen keep pace with technological changes in manufacturing while maintaining their current employment. The intent was to create a structured learning opportunity in a very traditional 'Brownfield', union-represented factory. The learning opportunity allowed employees to advance their skills and knowledge based upon their personal motivation level as the learning was not mandated by the employer. This case study describes the creation of the plan and initial implementation and also explores the development of the learning community that resulted from this activity. The case study includes descriptions of individuals who participated in the designed learning opportunity, those who chose not to participate and several who expanded their learning beyond the presented opportunity. Although this case study includes short term participant reaction and impact, long term impact will require additional time for true impact. It will be several years before the final results can truly be evaluated as the original intent continues to expand and now affects many more people than originally intended.
