There is a story that has been passed down for centuries in China about a young boy named Mencius whose mother, Mother Meng, guided him in crucial matters of conduct and morality throughout his life. The story emphasizes that Mother Meng's consistent and virtuous guidance enabled Mencius to become one of the most influential Confucian scholars and philosophers in Chinese history. This thesis provides historical context for seven different stories about Mother Meng and Mencius. Spanning from the second century BCE to CE 2011, these sources include versions of the story published in the genres of philosophy, satire, and cultural education. This thesis is a study of the ways the story has been told and retold, focusing on elements of historical context that illuminate changes through time, and the elements of the story that have remained the same. The central argument is that Mother Meng is consistently used as an example of an upstanding and exemplary mother figure, regardless of the genre, time period, or medium in which her story has been published, while at the same time definitions of gender, motherhood, and gendered virtue vary within the sources.
