This dissertation research study examined the differences in general executive function, behavior regulation, and problem solving, as cognitive processes, between military veteran college students who reported a diagnosis of PTSD, combat or non-combat related, and military veteran college students who reported they had never received a diagnosis of PTSD and had not been in combat or experienced or witnessed an event that involved serious injury to self or others. There were 74 male and female participants, aged 18 to 65, for this study. All participants were military veteran college students enrolled part time or full time in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. There were two study groups, PTSD present and PTSD absent, and participants were assigned to one of the groups depending on whether or not they reported receiving a diagnosis of PTSD. The researcher utilized a quantitative, non-experimental, causal-comparative or ex post facto, research design. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive FunctionRTM- Adult Version (BRIEF-A) self-report form, as an anonymous, confidential online survey, was used as the measurement instrument to collect data. The BRIEF-A measures three main variables, General Executive Function, Behavior Regulation, and Metacognition (problem solving); and nine sub-variables (Inhibit, Shift, Emotional Control, Self-Monitor, Initiate, Working Memory, Plan/Organize, Task Monitor, and Organization of Materials). A one-way MANOVA was used to analyze data collected from the BRIEF-A measurement instrument for all twelve study variables. An effect size of f=0.30, with an alpha level of 0.05 (p=0.05) and a 0.80 power level was used for the one-way MANOVA. The results of the one-way MANOVA determined there was a statistically significant difference with all twelve study variables for the PTSD present and PTSD absent groups if the p-values are equal or less than the level of significance value of 0.05 (p≤ 0.05). This indicates military veteran college students who reported receiving a diagnosis of PTSD, combat or non-combat related, showed a tendency for greater difficulty, or lowered functioning, for all twelve cognitive processing study variables. This study also provides recommendations and direction for future research.
