The purpose of this mixed methods study, combining a historical/theological study with a qualitative, grounded theory study, was to compare the biblical concept of discipleship in Acts 2:41-47 with contemporary practices of discipleship in online environments to propose a theory of best practices for future work in online discipleship. Theoretical foundations for the study of media, religion and culture were examined along with three current trends in online discipleship. A historical/theological study of Acts 2:41-47 revealed five key principles of discipleship in the early church. These five principles were utilized to develop a semi-structured interview guide for the qualitative portion of this study. Twenty Christian leaders of online ministries offering a discipleship component were interviewed through Skype technology. Data was coded and analyzed resulting in the Online Discipleship Grounded Theory Model. The qualitative study determined that connecting people in meaningful relationships with God and other Christians for spiritual growth is important to leaders in online ministries. The study revealed that ministry partnerships, customized content, and leadership training were contexts where leaders connect people in meaningful relationships. The study also revealed that funding, changing technologies, and cultural challenges were negative factors influencing the ability for leaders to connect people in meaningful relationships with God and others. Finally, the qualitative study reported that Bible engagement, prayer, mentors or coaches, and connection to the local church were strategies employed to connect people with God and other Christians for the purpose of spiritual growth. The consequence of this study was that leaders in online ministries strove to develop disciples who become multiplying disciple makers. Conclusions from the two studies, recommendations for current online ministries, and suggestions for future research were given.
