This dissertation is intended to serve as a thorough examination of a particular debate between Lho pa Thugs rje dpal and Rong ston Shakya rgyal mtshan (1367-1449). According to the colophon of this medieval Tibetan debate record, which also appears to be the only currently surviving medieval Tibetan debate record in Tibetan literature, this debate took place in Sa skya and was recorded by both debaters' disciples without bias. The date of this debate was sometime between 1388 and 1393 during Rong ston's first visit to the Gtsang area.

The main topic of this debate is the issue of whether or not buddhahood is present/exists in sentient beings. According to the claims of Thugs rje dpal, buddhahood must exist within sentient beings because the core of deshek (bde gshegs snying po / sugatagarbha) exists in sentient beings, which is the absolute embodiment (chos sku) possessed by Buddhas. Sentient beings remain in samsara because they do not realize that the core of deshek exists within them, just as an impoverished man who lives atop a buried treasure, but does not realize that it is there, remains mired in poverty. Rong ston argues that the unwanted consequence of Thugs rje dpal's position would be that effects would exist during the period of their causes, because the core of deshek that exists within sentient beings is the cause of buddhahood. This would be similar to saying that when someone eats a meal, they must be eating excrement, since the eaten food is the cause of excrement.

This thorough examination can be divided into three parts: (1) an analysis of the historical background, (2) an analysis of textual issues, and (3) an analysis of contextual issues. These three modes of inquiry are represented respectively in Chapter One, Chapters Two and Three, and Chapter Four.

The study of this medieval Tibetan debate record demonstrates that this record not only preserves a clear image of what an actual debate between two Tibetan masters looked like in the fourteenth century, but also reveals that Tibetan Buddhist debate has remained remarkably the same since that time.
