To address racial and ethnic service disparities in mental health care, the profession of psychology has implemented multicultural training in the education and training of psychologists. While multicultural training in psychology has evolved since its early years, a large percentage of graduates today still do not feel the training they received in graduate school has adequately prepared them to work with racial/ethnic minority clients. The purpose of the study was to explore which aspects of graduate multicultural training on racial/ethnic minority issues are better in preparing clinical and counseling psychologists to feel competent in working with culturally diverse clients. In a national sample of 228 clinical and counseling graduates and trainees, the study examined how the proportion of different types of graduate multicultural training on racial/ethnic minority issues and level of satisfaction with this training are related to self-perceived multicultural counseling competency. Participants completed a web-based survey, which included a Multicultural Training Questionnaire, Multicultural Competency Inventory (MCI), Multicultural Social Desirability Scale (MCSD), and a demographics questionnaire. Hierarchical regression analyses and Pearson correlations were used to test study hypotheses. Results showed the proportion of multicultural-infused courses, multicultural supervision, and racial/ethnic minority caseloads were significant predictors of multicultural competency scores. Proportion of multicultural training and satisfaction with training positively correlated with total multicultural competency scores. Satisfaction with training did not moderate the effect of proportion of different types of multicultural training on multicultural competency total scores. Findings from this study offer education and training implications for graduate programs in clinical and counseling psychology.
