Diverse questionnaire data on psychological adaption among 144 gay parent couples and 218 heterosexual couples was collected and compared with their adolescent children's psychological health and relationship functioning. Results showed that parents' attachment-anxiety and attachment-avoidance scores provide some partial effects as linked to child depression, but minimal effect for anxiety. The links that were identified for child outcomes were more pronounced in the straight families. Additional parental measures of depression, general health and anxiety symptoms provided significant links and serve as predictors for adopted adolescents' outcomes. These results echo the body of research showing that children of lesbian parents fare well, and largely speaking, the children from gay fathers are "alright". In fact, in some cases they are looking healthier than children in straight families.

The discussion focuses on the relative absence of prior work on gay fathers and their adolescent children's psychological health, and the contribution made by the current work. Suggestions are made for further research needed to empower gay men (and the society in which they live) for them to take on the parenting role if they wish.
