This qualitative study explored the experience of IPV of immigrant Mexican women residing in California U.S.-Mexico border regions. Using grounded theory to analyze the interviews with immigrant Mexican women, the goal of this qualitative study was to gain a better understanding of the cultural dynamics and experiences of immigrant Mexican women, living in U.S.-Mexico border regions, who were survivors of IPV. In particular, this investigation examined the experiences of 10 adult immigrant Mexican women that were victims of IPV while living in U.S.-Mexico border regions in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Interviews with participants reflected factors, such as cultural identity issues and psychological distress resulting from ruptured attachments experienced during the immigration process, which influenced the experience of IPV of immigrant Mexican women residing in U.S. border regions. Analysis of the data revealed five main categories and 13 major themes within those categories. The themes reflected participants' experiences with IPV while living in U.S. border regions, as well as their perception of themselves within the context of both the Mexican and American cultures. Themes were discussed in terms of how they converged and diverged from previous research pertaining to this population. Findings unique to this study contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the experience of IPV of immigrant Mexican women residing in U.S. border regions. These findings should assist in guiding mental health treatment services for immigrant Mexican women residing in U.S. border regions, hopefully enhancing the ability of clinicians to provide culturally sensitive treatment.
