Poor communication of patient information results in patient harm and death. As many as 210,000 deaths occur annually as a result of preventable healthcare errors (James, 2013). Larrabee's Model for Evidence-based Practice and Quality and Safety for Education of Nurses were utilized as theoretical concepts. Thirty eight undergraduate nursing students participated in the study. The control group (n=19) received didactic education while the experimental group (n=19) received guided human patient simulation experiences as the educational method. A post-test congestive heart failure simulation focused on assessment and communication with the patient and healthcare provider. Data were analyzed utilizing a Mann-Whitney U test. Mean performance scores of the experimental group were higher (p<0.05), supporting simulation as a method for communication skills education. Nursing educators should seek out simulation and interdisciplinary education opportunities. A shift in educational paradigms is essential for student-centered learning and for improving quality and safety outcomes for patients.
