This is a thesis that concerns anxiety in preschool children. The literature shows that there has been considerable debate about how to measure anxiety in such young children. Various methods have used questionnaires, self-reports, and behavioral observations. In the present study, thirty-two preschool children were assessed for anxiety using multiple methods. The parents and the teachers of the children completed versions of the Revised Kinship Center Questionnaire (assessing attachment and anxiety in young children); then the children participated in two play sessions, one with a familiar adult (the teacher) and another with a stranger. The findings showed that the parent and teacher rating did not relate to the children's behavior in the play session with the familiar adult. These ratings, however, were predictive of the children's behavior when playing in the presence of a strange adult. These findings are discussed in terms of anxiety being assessed in appropriate settings.
