At an alarming rate, many of today's veterans are returning from military service with significant physical and/or mental disabilities. Many are disabled to the extent they have very limited options for future employment after military discharge. This qualitative research focused on the essence of veterans with a service-connected disability (VSCD) who have transitioned into successful self-employed entrepreneurs, after completing small business training specifically designed for this population of veterans. The main research question asked, How do veterans with a service-connected disability experience the transition(s) from soldier to successful civilian entrepreneur? The criteria for this study required that the participants must have been (a) the recipient of a service-connected disability rating of 30% or greater, (b) the recipient of an honorable medical discharge from the armed services, and (c) gainfully self-employed for a minimum of one year after discharge. This research investigated the shared and lived transitional experiences among this subpopulation of disabled veterans. The scholarly research on the World Health Organization (WHO) Model of Disability Theory and Mezirow's Transformational Learning Theory were utilized to help better understand the experiences of both disability and growth through transitional learning to achieve success. Moustakas's process of data analysis was utilized for raw data organization of this research study. The findings suggest that veterans progress through multiple points of transition and must recognize and act on opportunities to integrate changes that are key to achieving both personal and professional success. These findings also suggest points for further research study and present possible amplifications for the training programs that help to support the VSCD who want to become successful entrepreneurs.
