520 $a The first chapter investigates the effect of standardization in the context of digitization of life sciences research. Digitization of life sciences research is promising for new breakthroughs, but the accumulation of data requires scientists to devote more time and effort to understanding the data, which may potentially be an access cost. I argue that data standardization reduces access cost and facilitate knowledge accumulation in this field. Using a natural experiment in which different academic journals adopted a data reporting standard at different times, I examine the effect of this standard on subsequent research. I find that standardized data reporting greatly increases future use of the data.
520 $a The second chapter investigates the patent litigation strategy of patent-assertion entities (PAEs). PAEs are firms whose main business is purchasing and asserting patents. The practices of PAEs have spread recently. I show that PAEs have a different patent litigation strategy compared with practicing companies. Comparing patent lawsuits involving PAEs with lawsuits involving practicing companies, I find that PAEs are more likely to settle their lawsuits and their lawsuits are shorter. I also find that lawsuits involving PAEs are shorter when the value of litigated patents is higher and when the litigated patents are related to communication technology. However, lawsuits involving practicing firms show a reverse pattern.
520 $a The last chapter investigates the impact of improved information transparency in the mutual fund industry, an industry with complex product information. I explore the effect of "Summary Prospectus" rules on the market structure of S&P 500 index mutual funds. "Summary Prospectus" rules require a standardized disclosure of key information at the beginning of a mutual fund prospectus which may facilitate consumers' search for fund information. I find that after the adoption of the rules, consumers are more likely to invest in cheaper funds without sales charges. This indicates that the ease of information access can have important consequences for industry structure.
