Thesis (M.F.A.)--University of Louisville, 2010.
Theatre is often called the mirror of life; and as actors we provide the reflections of reality. This thesis examines what I feel my responsibility is as a black female artist; how I explore the possibilities of character within that responsibility; and how the development of the role of Skoolie, in Kia Corthron's Come Down Burning served as the catalyst for the establishment of my personal creative process. Chapter One states my philosophy about acting, and what I believe to be my responsibility as a theatre artist; it also explains how I became an actor, and early experiences that prompted my career. Chapter Two discusses my journey in graduate school, how I discovered my strengths and weaknesses as an actor during my matriculation; and how those discoveries informed my long and short-term goals. Chapter Three reveals the struggle of the black actor, and how that struggle affected both the choosing and preparation of my thesis role. Chapter Four describes the black female circumstance, while outlining the extensive research that I completed for my thesis role. Chapter Five displays my use of theory in performance, including an explanation of the development of my creative process established through the preparation of my thesis role. Chapter Six explores the aesthetic value of truth in performance, and how my philosophy about acting has been solidified through the process of developing my thesis.
