An online study was conducted to examine if the gender of a leader in the workplace is related to people's judgments of that leader's display of emotions. 209 subjects completed the study. Participants were divided into two groups, each group read vignettes about either male or female characters. Ratings of appropriateness were compared between groups using t tests to examine if the gender of the character was related to ratings to appropriateness. Ratings of appropriateness were found to be gender specific in one instance, when the character displayed extreme sadness, t(207) = 2.75, p = .004. Specifically, the male character's display of crying was seen as less appropriate than the female character's display of the same behavior.
