Autism is a growing diagnosis in the United States. About 1 in 68 children have been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (CDC, 2014). Studies have shown that Latinos have a lower prevalence rate of autism when compared to nonLatinos (Liptak et al., 2008), which may be due to having less access to healthcare either because of low socioeconomic status or immigration policies. Few studies have explored the experience of a Latino family during the diagnosis process of their child with autism. This present study is a qualitative study focusing on the experience of immigrant Mexican families who have a child diagnosed with autism. Six Mexican mothers were interviewed for this study. Results showed common themes, such as a negative reaction to the diagnosis, lack of awareness of autism, lack of family support, language barriers, racial discrimination, lack of prompt referrals prior to the diagnosis, and difficulty accessing services. Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that there be more available informative resources on autism in Spanish, more autism awareness within the community, more communication amongst professionals and more support for Latino families through support groups for parents.
