The purpose of this research was to examine cross-cultural perspectives of parents of typically developing preschool-age children pertaining to their book-reading habits and attitudes. The objectives of this study were to examine the book-reading habits and attitudes of culturally diverse families, and to investigate the relationship between their book-reading habits and attitudes, and their ratings of their children's pre-literacy skills. White, African American, and Hispanic parents completed a book-reading habits and attitudes questionnaire and an emergent literacy skills questionnaire. Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient (r) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used to compare group results. Results of the study revealed variation among Spanish-speaking Hispanic caregivers and White and African American caregivers. Hispanic caregiver ratings were lower than White and African American caregiver ratings on measures of book-reading habits and attitudes, and their children's emergent literacy skills. Implications for working with culturally diverse families and for future research are discussed.
