This systematic review examined the research evidence of the effectiveness of massage therapy on emotional regulation for children through age twenty-one, with or at risk for disabilities. A systematic literature review was conducted by searching electronic databases for articles published after the year 2003. Six studies were selected based on specific inclusion criteria, and given an internal validity rating. All six studies were level I, randomized control trials, and varied in terms of patient diagnoses, specific intervention protocols, length of each massage, duration of intervention, and outcome measures used. All studies examined the effect of massage therapy on emotional regulation for children with or at risk for disabilities. Results suggest that massage therapy may improve some aspects of emotional regulation for children with or at risk for disabilities. Significant positive effects were shown as a result of massage on improved feelings of anxiety and mood; however, findings regarding the effect of massage on improvement of social skills were inconclusive. Results of these studies may not be generalized due to the wide range of ages and variety of patient diagnoses. Further research is needed to determine the most effective dose and protocol for massage delivery, and which pediatric condition or diagnosis may benefit most from receiving massage interventions. Future research is needed to determine if massage therapy is an effective intervention for occupational therapists to improve emotional regulation skills for children with or at risk for disabilities, when delivered as a preparatory method, prior to an occupation based intervention.
