The family is where one first starts to develop their identity and sense of self through direct and indirect communication. Family life for anyone can be chaotic with resources stretched very thin; however, this is exacerbated in a family comprised of a child with a disability. Sibling-sibling relationships and child-parent relationships can shape the ways that one views themselves and the world. While collecting data for a thesis project, the researcher held interviews with four typically developing participants (N=4) who have siblings with an intellectual disability. Exploratory qualitative research was collected through semi-structured interviews aimed at gathering information on the sibling experience to address the questions of nondisabled sibling to sibling with a disability (SWD) relationships and interactions and nondisabled sibling roles within the family. These interviews were transcribed verbatim and coded and compared using the qualitative methodology of constant comparison to look for commonalities and differences among participants in the study. The findings suggest that there may be some commonalities within the nondisabled sibling experience. Namely, several participants indicated large caretaking roles, which led to role confusion. Additionally, all participants found their nondisabled family members to be valuable supports in coping with the difficulties of having a SWD. Most participants felt that their SWDs occupied much of the social capital within the family, which created sibling competition. Implications for future research and informed practice are also discussed.
