The purpose of this study was to find out what attributes or variables might be common to women who reach the goal to become presidents of colleges and universities to enable others to accomplish the same. With women making up 60% of the college student population and 26% of college and university presidents, it is important that more women become presidents at these institutions. Ten former and current women presidents of colleges and universities across the USA were interviewed to provide insight and share their perspectives regarding when they decided to pursue, the pathways to achieve, and experiences along the way and during the presidency. Also, seven board members of institutions of higher education that had conducted presidential searches in the last three to five years were interviewed for their perspectives on the hiring process. The four top themes that emerged were mentors, family, professional experiences and leadership development.
