Despite many years of research on families, children, and relationships regarding how they function and what impacts them, several questions still remain. These complex issues have many factors to take into account. The study addressed this phenomenon by investigating the relationship between couple relationship satisfaction and parenting style (i.e., authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive) as well as demographic influences (i.e., age, income, education, and employment status) among nonmarried parents. Two research questions guided this quantitative study. The first question addressed relationship satisfactions among couples and parenting styles among nonmarried parents of children in a Head Start program. The second question addressed demographic influences on relationship satisfaction and parenting styles among nonmarried parents of children in a Head Start program. Bowen's family systems theory guided the framework for this study. A total of 120 biological mothers or fathers and their significant others participated in the study. Participants ranged in age from 21 to 52. Their educational attainment levels ranged from having a GED to a master's degree. Income levels ranged from under $10,000 to $75,000. Employment status ranged from being in school to full-time employment. Participants were surveyed using the Parental Authority Questionnaire, Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and a demographic questionnaire designed by the researcher. Data were analyzed using stepwise multiple regression and Pearson correlation. The findings from this study added to the body of knowledge on family systems, couple relationships, and parenting styles while also informing social workers, human service professionals, and community organizations of ways to support child and family development. Recommendations for future research included strengthening awareness of changing family patterns, blended families, family relationships, and their impact on children and families. Furthermore, examining partner influence more closely and the living situations of many children in Head Start programs may help one to understand these complex issues.
