Using information from the 2009-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the current study examines the influence of socioeconomic status on dietary decision making. A multiple linear regression method was used to study how income, household education, and work schedule affect the importance of perceived healthfulness, price, ease of preparation, shelf-life, and food taste. Income and the importance of price were negatively correlated. Household education and the importance of perceived healthfulness were also negatively correlated, though this relationship lost significance once control variables were added to the model. There were no relationships between work schedule and the importance placed on ease of preparation nor shelf-life. No relationships on the importance of food taste were found to be statistically significant for any predictor. This study provides further evidence that income plays a significant role in diet. Prior research found evidence that working an irregular schedule results in diminished health outcomes. The current study suggests that this relationship between work schedule and health is independent of diet.
