This study explores the performance of hegemonic masculinity in popular culture conventions, in regards to how women cosplayers are perceived and approached by men. That is why I felt it was necessary to ask: why do men act this way vis-a-vis women at an event where the sole purpose for all parties is to dress up as a character that does not reflect who they are as men and women? I draw from interviews collected from men who are familiar with convention culture. Participant observation and visual methods were also used, in order to provide social context and insight into this rapidly growing subculture. I found that conventions are a hegemonic masculine space (or boy's club), and men are reluctant to incorporate women as legitimate members. Men resist the integration of women through the use of various forms of symbolic violence---such as sexual harassment. It is also important to note the harassment of women cosplayers is unique to this convention, because of the cultural assumptions related to cosplay; that stigmatize those who do not conform to having their picture taken.
