Open innovation has been portrayed in the literature as a powerful means to spur innovation performance within a business. Open innovation's two broad aspects, in-bound and out-bound knowledge flows, strive to connect the business with latent knowledge capabilities found within the ecosystem. Collaboration with partners, customers, and suppliers are all examples of in-bound knowledge flows. Acquisitions, licensing, and co-patenting are all examples of out-bound knowledge flow. The dissertation will employ a systematic review of the literature and a realist epistemology to address these research questions: * How does the organizational culture of the business influence the application of open innovation as an organizational knowledge creation strategy? * To what extent do different sources of knowledge influence the application of open innovation as a firm's approach to organizational knowledge creation? Significant from a leadership perspective, this dissertation finds that open innovation's benefits can be obtained only through proactive management of knowledge exchange structures. The central issue is exposing proprietary and confidential knowledge to external sources. The consequences of knowledge spillover balanced against proactive management of knowledge exchange structure could lead to increased absorptive capacity and enhanced innovation performance.
