This study explores the functions of postverbal position in Hindi with the aim of establishing whether postverbal position is the primary sentential position of focus. The cross-linguistic tendency towards sentence-final focus is challenged by SOV languages such as Hindi, which usually require a sentence-final verb. In the corpus of seven Hindi narratives analyzed, three functions of postverbal position are found: afterthought, intermediate grounding, and focus. In addition, verbless presentation of a constituent in sentence-final position is found to be a convention of focus in the Hindi corpus. Quantitative analysis demonstrates that postverbal position in Hindi is more specialized for intermediate grounding than for focus, and that the primary place of focus is preverbal position. On the basis of these findings, Hindi is situated along a continuum of strictness of verb-finality for SOV languages.
