Interdisciplinary Collaborative Performance: A Practical Investigation and Guide to Collaboration Carol E. Carlson Doctor of Musical Arts: Violin Performance ABSTRACT The Doctoral Performance and Research submitted by Carol E. Carlson, under the direction of Felicia Moye at the University of Wisconsin--Madison, in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts consists of the following: I. Written Project: "Interdisciplinary Collaborative Performance: A Practical Investigation and Guide to Collaboration" This 75 page written project is an investigation into the process of creating interdisciplinary collaborative performances. The project consists of practical research wherein new works are created through the combination of musical composition, choreography, and other creative collaborative processes, and then performed for the public. Each work is then analyzed for content, artistic merit, collaborative success, and critical review (if applicable). A suggested methodology for the undertaking of interdisciplinary collaboration, notes on integrating this research into university curriculum, and a complete bibliography are included for reference. II. Solo Recital, 11/22/11, Morphy Hall Sonata in A--Major, op.47 "Kreutzer" --- Beethoven Sonata in D--Major, op.94bis --- Prokofiev III. Lecture Recital, 3/4/12, Morphy Hall "Living Composers, Live Performers: A DMA lecture--recital addressing the merits and challenges of interdisciplinary collaborative performance" Includes a performance encompassing music, dance and text by two musicians, two actors, and five dancers. Works include music by Brad Fowler and Warren Gooch; text by Rilke, Plath, Goethe, and Shakespeare; choreography by the dancers; and images by Rembrandt, Blake, and others. IV. Solo Recital, Facets, 11/15/12, Margret H'Doubler Performance Space The culmination of collaborative work with choreographer Marlene Skog in the UWMadison Dance Department, this performance includes three original works composed by Carlson: Swan (2010), Village (2012), and ROCK/PAPER/SCISSORS! (2012). V. Concerto Recital, 4/27/13, Morphy Hall Concerto in D--Major, op.77, Allegro non troppo --- Brahms Concerto in E--Major, RV269 "La primavera" --- Vivaldi Concerto in G--minor, RV315 "L'estate" --- Vivaldi VI. Chamber Recital, 12/12/13, Antietam Hall Quartet No.7, op.108 --- Shostakovich Quartet No.2 in D-Major --- Borodin VII. Chamber Recital, 3/8/14, Capitol Lakes Great Hall Violin Sonata in G--minor, L140 --- Debussy Piano Trio in B--flat Major, op.99 --- Schubert.
