Using data from Fleisher and Krienert's "Ethno-Methodological Study of the Subculture of Prison Inmate Sexuality in the United States, 2004-2005," a survey of inmates from 23 male correctional institutions, this study investigates whether prior victimization, personal characteristics associated with vulnerability, beliefs about prison staff, and previous correctional experience influence prison rape perceptions. It is important to study inmate perceptions of rape prevalence in order to better understand the development of these perceptions, given the possibility that prolonged anxiety and fear about victimization may affect mental and physical health and quality of life (Wolff, et al., 2007), possibly even accounting for poor adjustment that may be evident in psychophysiological health concerns (Maitland & Sluder, 1996; Davison & Neale, 1990) or psychosomatic effects (Scacco, 1982). After testing a number of hypotheses derived from the previous findings, this study found some evidence to suggest that Hispanic inmates, inmates who have previously been treated for mental health issues, inmates who have committed violent offenses, inmates who consider themselves to be homosexual, bisexual, and transgender, and inmates who feel that staff members are involved in prison rape were more likely to report higher estimates of the prevalence of prison rape. These results suggest that prison rape perceptions may be influenced by some personal characteristics and experiences. Given these findings, it may be possible for prison rape perceptions to be altered if research focuses on the specific areas of concern for inmates with the goal of understanding why these perceptions exist. More research is needed to determine if changes should be made to prison policies or prison management in order to address these concerns about prison rape.
