With the continually expanding use of cyber-physical systems, developing means to analyze their functionality and understand their behavior becomes increasingly important. This is especially true when considering the prevalence of CPSs in safety critical applications such as heating and cooling systems, electric grid components, medical devices, traffic control, and automotive networks. While the use of cyber-physical systems in other industries might still be in its infancy, the automotive industry has long relied on CPSs and continues to expand their responsibilities. Indeed, safe vehicle operation is, in many cases, impossible without CPSs. The proprietary nature of these systems, while understandable from the manufacturer's point of view, hampers in-depth analysis. This dissertation proposes a flexible methodology that enables the system characterization and the analysis of cyber-physical systems in automotive information networks with tools and techniques that can easily modified to target other areas of application.
