The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of cognitive specific (CS) mental imagery and motivational self-talk (ST) on the reaction times of trained martial artists. Both the CS imagery and the motivational ST were tested separately and compared to the control group. The interaction of motivational ST and CS imagery was tested and compared to the control group as well. The study also compared the interventions to each other by utilizing a within-subjects and between-subjects pre-post treatment design with a power sample of more than 200 participants. A significant difference was found between each intervention and the control group. The largest difference was found between the group that used both cognitive specific mental imagery and motivational self-talk when compared to the control group. There was also a significant difference found when the CS imagery and motivational ST group was compared to the group that used only self-talk. The participants in the control group had overall slower reaction times during the second trial.
