Thesis (Psy.D.)--Roosevelt University, 2008.
This present study explored variables that may predict preferences and self-reported positive outcomes for progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and imagery. Two classes containing a total of 41 college students were either first taught PMR and then imagery, or first imagery and then PMR. Two 30-minute compact discs were used by the participants. All participants first took the Smith Relaxation Prediction Inventory to determine preference for imagery and PMR. After performing each exercise, all participants then took the Smith Relaxation Evaluation Scale and the Smith Relaxation States Inventory, Third Edition.

I hypothesized that: (1) Trainee pretest endorsement of the statement "I might want to learn to relax in order to reduce physical tension in my muscles" will correlate positively with rated liking and effectiveness of a single session of PMR. (2) Trainee pretest ratings of statements "I am good at fantasy and visualization," "I might seriously consider a relaxation exercise that involves fantasy and imagery," and "I might seriously consider a relaxation exercise that involves visualization" will correlate positively with rated liking and effectiveness of a single session of imagery.

The statement "I might seriously consider a relaxation exercise that involves visualization" did correlate positively (r = .43, p = .05) with rated liking and effectiveness of a single session of imagery. None of the other hypotheses were supported.
