The use of timber products has been around since the beginning of time. Products such as plywood, lumber, paper, and fuel, all derive from timber. Although, timber is one of the most used renewable natural resource (Smith 2006), it can be harvested in a sustainable manner. Revealing the perceptions on specific issues from employees within the industry will allow the knowledge for managers to guide programs toward sustainability. Those with the most experience and age have the prior knowledge of the changes that have occurred; therefore, their beliefs may be different from other participants. In addition, the level of employment is directly proportional to income and responsibilities, therefore, different perspectives may emerge. This study was conducted by using a quantitative method. This survey design gave the quantitative data needed to see the different perceptions within the industry. The perceptions on environmental and social issues will be the focus of the study. The findings from the study exposed the perception of safety issues being the most important issues in the timber harvesting industry, with the second most important being environmental issues. Production, maintenance, and work ethics, respectively, were believed to be the least important issues. However, the differences between genders were, female participants believe work ethics to be the second most important issue, while males had work ethics ranked as the least important. In addition, looking at the different ranks of employment, the landowners perceived environmental issues were more important than safety issues. All the different perceptions are carted in chapter 4 and summarized in chapter 5.
