Special operations forces (SOF) education prepares SOF to solve ambiguous, complex problems across the spectrum of conflict through dynamic, adaptive professional education. Research has shown that active learning develops problem solving proficiency so active learning methodologies should support desired SOF learning outcomes. How would the use of active learning impact the effectiveness of the SOF education? What active learning methodologies would be the most efficient and effective in SOF education courses? This three-staged action research contributed to answering these questions. Using blended research methodology, the state of active learning at a research site was established. Then an intervention designed to enhance organizational understanding and appreciation of active learning was conducted. Finally, data was again collected to determine if attitudes had changed and active learning methodologies were used more frequently. The results indicated that faculty became more appreciative of active learning and that student evaluations and classroom usage showed positive change. Beyond the impact of the intervention, the research showed that case study analysis exploiting student experiences and culminated in collaborative group presentations is generally the most efficient and effective method of active learning the research site employs but that well integrated active learning by instructors who are comfortable as facilitators will result in improved learning outcomes across the learning spectrum. Future research should attempt to better determine the correlation between specific types and quantities of active learning and learning outcomes.
