This applied dissertation was designed to provide a better understanding of the effect of problem-based learning on critical thinking skills. The rationale behind the study is a review of the literature, showing little or no evidence that problem-based learning has an impact on hypothetical deductive reasoning. The research literature in this applied dissertation was based on social learning theory and self-directed learning.

The hypothesis was that critical thinking skills will increase as a result of attending a problem-based-learning course. The research consisted of observing and recording data from 13 graduate students enrolled in a problem-based learning course over a 12-week period.

The results of the qualitative data indicates participants had difficulty solving problems while forming group working patterns and that participants prefer a known strategy to solve-problems as a group. The quantitative data shows a decline in critical thinking and problem solving test scores following the problem-based learning course.
