Theories of stress and coping would suggest that life for African-Americans (AAs) at predominantly White universities and colleges (PWUs) is more stressful than for AAs at predominantly African-American universities and colleges (PAAUs). These same theories would predict that AAs at PWUs have greater stress than Whites at PWUs. Empirical tests of these predictions have produced inconsistent results. One reason may be that measures of stress have not been constructed to assess the stressors and coping resources that are most relevant to the college experiences of AAs. The purpose of this study was to determine if a newly developed measure, the Stress Scale for African-American College Students (SSACS) could detect differences predicted by the relevant theories. Specifically, the predictions tested here were that stress scores from the SSACS would be higher for AAs at PWUs than AAs at PAAUs and higher for AAs at PWUs than for Whites at PWUs.

There were 352 participants from two PWUs and two PAAUs. There were 52 AAs from PWUs 187 AAs from PAAUs, 84 Whites from PWUs. Participants completed the SSACS, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Hassles Scale (HS), and a demographic questionnaire.

Factor analysis of the SSACS indicated that the items could be usefully grouped into three subscales; perceptions of the environment, financial and social support, and assimilation pressures. Predicted differences between AAs at PWUs vs. AAs at PAAUs were observed only for the environment and support factors of the SSACS. Also, predicted differences between the AAs vs. Whites at PWUs were observed for the support factor and also for the STAIS. The results of this study indicate that AA students at PAAUs felt more comfortable at their university, more supported by their faculty, and more content with their financial situations than AA students at PWUs, Gender differences were also revealed.

The SSACS is capable of detecting differences that the STAI and HS are not. These findings support the notion that inconsistencies in the literature are not due to the lack of differences, but to the lack of a measure capable of detecting the differences.
