This study was designed to test the null hypotheses of no elevation in basal metabolic rate (BMR) above the WHO predictions and no elevation of winter BMR over summer BMR in pastoral nomads living at 47°N in Mongolia.

This study was designed to test the null hypotheses of no elevation in basal metabolic rate (BMR) above the WHO predictions and no elevation of winter BMR over summer BMR in pastoral nomads living at 47°N in Mongolia.

BMR was measured on a sample of 119 nomads 18--81 years of age during the summer of 1997 (59 males and 60 females). Ninety-five nomads 18--81 years of age were re-studied during the winter of 1997--98 (51 males and 44 females). Measurements were made using the standard Douglas bag method of indirect calorimetry under thermoneutral and fasting conditions in the morning immediately following awakening from a comfortable overnight sleep.

Both summer and winter measured BMR were accurately estimated by age and sex-specific WHO equations. There was no significant seasonal change in measured BMR in any age sex group.

Determinants of inter-individual and seasonal variability of BMR were examined by regression analyses with indicators of body size and body composition, cold exposure and dietary protein intake. Body size and body composition were measured by anthropometry, cold stress by intermittent and continuous monitoring and dietary protein intake by the 24-hour weighed food intake method. Fat-free mass was a strong and significant predictor for BMR in all age-sex groups for both study seasons. Variation in fat-free mass explained 81% of summer and 84% of winter BMR variation in the summer and winter samples, respectively.

Except for a minor influence in two age-sex groups (i.e., 6% or less), winter cold stress and daytime exposure to winter cold were not associated with increase in BMR. Similarly, seasonal variation in protein intake was not associated with increase in BMR. These findings are consistent with the lack of seasonal difference in BMR and argue against the hypotheses that cold stress and high dietary protein elevate BMR in high latitude populations.

In summary, this study found no elevation of BMR and no elevation of winter BMR over summer BMR in this indigenous, high latitude population.
