What makes firms perform well? If a firm is viewed as a nexus of contracts, does the location of ownership really matter in terms of economic efficiency? This thesis attempts to answer these questions by investigating the impact of corporate governance, financial incentives, and product market competition on firm performance. The theory is applied to an application in a transitional economy, the Chinese Rural Non-farm Enterprises (RNE), which is an organizational innovation of public ownership as a response to open product and factor market competition.

520 $a This paper is concerned with the econometric analysis for a seven-year panel (1984--90) of 300 large-scale RNEs. Most of these enterprises in the sample are run by local township and village governments. This particular type of RNEs is defined in this study as Township and Village Enterprises (TVE). Empirical results in this paper consistently indicate that firms' real gross output values are positively influenced by the following factors: profit-sharing bonus payment, managerial autonomy, product market competition, and capital and labor market conditions. The strong performance of these sampled TVE firms is thus attributable to improved internal incentives and intensified product market competition. The implications derived from this random sample of 300 large TVEs also provide some explanation on the rise of the Chinese RNE sector.
