This dissertation reviews and modifies the previous models and methodologies concerning foreign direct investment, and applies the related theories and methodologies to the study of the recently growing investment activities of the Taiwanese firms in the Xiamen Special Economic Zone (SEZ). It covers two aspects: their production behavior and their import and export performances. The study is conducted in a comparative manner, using a data series, to reveal the behavioral differences between the Taiwanese investors and their local counterparts.

Reducing production costs is found to be the most important factor in investors deciding to transfer their production facilities to the SEZ. There are no significant differences in investment or production scale between the two type of firms, but the investors' capital-labor ratios and the unit value added per worker are relatively higher compared with that of their local counterparts. Econometric tests indicate that the production behavior of the two types of firms are significantly different: the investors heavily relied upon the increases in labor employed to reach higher output level, whereas their local counterparts raised production scale mainly through fixed assets increments.

The investors have become the typical export producers of the "two-ends-out" production pattern in the SEZ. Their high export propensity is attributed to their mainland investment motive, existing production technology, previous market structure, heavy factor import dependence, and the wholly-owned enterprise status. Econometric tests confirm that their export level is closely related to their import dependence, but negatively affected by their production scale and capital intensity. It reveals that, as time elapses, while their local counterparts' reliance upon the world market apparently increased, the investors' import dependence and export propensity have significantly declined. The production activities of the investors have been gradually merged with local economy.
