The study of literature is an important academic and social endeavor that requires a lifetime of study in order to ascertain the nuances and meanings across the various literary genres. Therefore, this dissertation presents a series of five original essays that offer deeper meaning and understanding for those who enjoy delving more fully into the tremendous escape that literature provides. In this dissertation, a close examination is made into literary terminology and how it applies from a practical standpoint in the study and appreciation of various works. The short stories included in this dissertation are "The Yellow Wallpaper," "A Rose for Emily," "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," and "The Catbird Seat." The poems are "The Chimney Sweeper," "Resolution and Independence," and "This Lime Tree Bower My Prison." The novels are Alburquerque and Death Comes for the Archbishop . This dissertation also examines the importance of studying literature.
