While tte impact of transcendent experiences in the lives of non-athletes has been explored in the literature, what has remained largely unexamined is the impact of such experiences on athletes engaged in non-traditional sports. Studies addressing the question of personal change in non-traditional athletes emphasize the extreme sport athlete and often attribute personal change to factors unrelated to specific correlated transcendent experiences. This study examines high-risk non-traditional athletes' subjective experience of personal change arising from antecedent sport related transcendent experiences. The study also identifies reported differences in transcendent experiences and personal change between sport risk levels in non-traditional sports.

One hundred forty eight respondents completed an online survey examining experiences of transcendence that occurred while engaged in non-traditional sports and correlated post-transcendent personal change. Basic quantitative assessment of questionnaire responses was used to compare transcendence and personal change responses across levels of sport risk. A multiple case study design was utilized to examine the nature of post-transcendent personal change in high-risk athletes. Twelve survey respondents meeting the criteria of the study (having had an experience of transcendence while engaged in their sport) participated in an in-depth interview exploring their experiences of post-transcendence personal change. Reductive cross-case analysis identified principle themes of personal change for high-risk non-traditional athletes.

The study found that: (a) transcendent experiences are often part of the high-risk non-traditional athlete's sport experience; (b) correlated personal changes experienced by these athletes are similar to those experienced by non-athletes; (c) following an experience of transcendence, high-risk non-traditional athletes report a significant reduction of fear, a deeper experience of love, a more inclusive experience of the sacred, and a felt imperative to align personal life with the insight revealed by their transcendent experience; (d) high-risk non-traditional sports is a threshold level of risk sport at which the impact of a transcendent experience significantly increases the likelihood of catalyzing significant personal change; and (e) an inverse relationship exists between the frequency of a transcendent experience's occurrence in non-traditional sports and its correlation with a significant reduction in fear. The study concludes that risk level in non-traditional sports influences post-transcendence personal change.
