Background: Inappropriate prescribing in the elderly has an increased risk of adverse drug reactions and a consequently higher rate of morbidity and mortality. A large portion of the ongoing problem is preventable by utilizing a drug monitoring tool such as the Beer's Criteria by assisting in the identification of inappropriate medications to clinicians.

Objective: To reduce the fall rate in elderly patients in a skilled rehabilitation facility by using the validated Beer's Criteria monitoring tool.

Method: 215 male and female patients aged 65 or older had their admission orders reviewed for inappropriate medications upon admission to a small skilled rehabilitation facility located in Oregon over a nine-month period. Results: Total reduction in fall rate from 22% to 5 % over a 9 month period.
