Spatial point pattern processes have been widely studied and applied in different areas such as criminology, biology, and ecology. With the assumptions of stationarity and isotropy, the K function with its estimate is commonly used to study the spatial dependency. In this thesis, we develop the K function for point pattern processes on the sphere. The K function obtained on the sphere is compared to its counterpart in planar Euclidean space R2. We show that the K function is proportional to 1-- cos(distance) under the assumption of complete spatial randomness (CSR), while it is proportional to the square of distance in Euclidean space. In addition, we apply the spherical K function to examine regular and equidistant hexagonal global grid. The data of regular latitude-longitude grids is shown to be a clustered point pattern because there are more points in polar regions than in the equator region. Meanwhile, the hexagonal grid shows states a dispersed spatial point pattern. Moreover, the structure of the Global Comprehensive Operating System (GCOS) Upper-Air Network (GUAN) is analyzed by its spherical K function to test the even spatial coverage of the stations. We learn that it is clustered among some distances between stations due to the constraints of coasts and continents. Our spherical K function provides a supplementary analysis for the spatial point process and a precise tool for many applications such as astronomy, anatomy, and neuroscience. We also provide R codes for the spherical K function.
