Improving Knowledge and Skill of Licensed Nurses for detecting Oral Pain in Cognitively Impaired Nursing Home Patients Abstract Oral disease has been on the rise in the skilled nursing home patient population. Untreated oral disease can go undetected for long periods of time due to the busy and heavy workloads of nursing care home staff. Prolonged under-detection of oral disease can result in oral pain and eventually cause even more serious problems such as infection. Despite the increase in oral disease rates in nursing home patients, the expertise of licensed nurses is often underutilized. Accurate diagnosis and effective management of oral disease is required in order to ensure patient quality of life.

This project describes the development of an educational module designed to increase the knowledge and skill of licensed nurses for detecting oral pain in the cognitively impaired nursing home population. Module development was based on clinical and professional experience, as well as a review of the literature. The educational module was reviewed by a panel of experts, including a convenience sample of individuals from varied dental and nursing backgrounds. The experts were given a copy of the educational module and were asked to comment on content, readability, and visual appeal of the educational module. Once all feedback was collected, themes were created and input was incorporated into a revised final version of the educational module. Further study using the educational module as a standardized training for licensed nurses in the nursing home setting is indicated.
