Background: The black American population continues to grow owing in part to global migration. This growth comes with diversity in health practices and risks. Nurses are well placed in the healthcare field to affect the health of this population. Objective: The goal of this qualitative study was to explore the knowledge nurses hold on the diverse nature of the black American population. Method: Semi-structured interviews were used to gather information from 9 nurses. This sample of nurses had little knowledge of the cultural diversity within the black American population. Findings: The knowledge held by nurses was dependent mostly on their country of origin and their upbringing. This study exposed a perception of universality in the way the nurses treated all patients. It also exposed the spatial-racial lines that still exist in the US, which limits the interactions other races have with black Americans. Implications: The study implications were the 1) need for more exploration of nursing knowledge on black Americans with perhaps a larger sample of nurses and 2) development of education in the nursing and healthcare regarding this diversity.
