It is becoming increasingly common that violent felons and sex offenders are being housed in long-term nursing care facilities alongside the elderly and disabled. Notwithstanding, the acceptance of people with disabilities in long-term nursing care facilities is a Federal mandate and regulated by the American Disability Act. This proximity may increase dangerous risks of victimization upon vulnerable populations. No one knows the scope of the victimization which maybe occurring, nor the long-term care nurses' experiences or involvement with prevention and reporting of abuse. Research has shown when violent resident to resident aggressive incidents occur within long-term care facilities, there is little or no information regarding the characteristics of the alleged resident perpetrators. Residency placement of violent felons and sex offenders in long-term nursing facilities is a problem, because there are pose dangerous risks of resident to resident aggressive behavior. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of long-term care nurses regarding their views of residency placement of violent felons and sex offenders and resident to resident aggressive behavior. The phenomenological research study included sixteen individual interviews of long-term care nurses throughout the U.S. regarding their perceptions as primary caretakers. Data were analyzed and six themes emerged regarding belief of posed dangerous risks of residency placement of violent felons and sex offenders, violent occurrences of resident to resident aggressive behavior; aggressive behaviors of spitting, hitting and verbal abuse; decisions of reporting aggressive behavior to authority; need for job training in prevention; and need for notification of residents who have violent criminal backgrounds. The results from the study will add to the current literature, as no previous studies have been performed on long-term care nurses' perceptions of posed dangerous risks of residency placement of violent felons and sex offenders in long-term care facilities among vulnerable residents. The results will also be useful to long-term care stakeholders, administrators and criminal justice authorities for the use in implications for residency overviews, enhancement of job training programs and support needed for long-term care nurses.
