An interview guide was developed based on the main tenets of the PEN-3 framework (Airhihenbuwa, 2007). The 14 participants in this study were self-identified non-diabetic African American men having a first degree relative with T2DM. Themes and sub-themes emerged from the analysis of the transcripts which were cultural identity, relationships and expectations, and cultural empowerment. Responses to inquiry related to perceptions of community, health, and knowledge of T2DM, provided a better understanding of the phenomenon under study.

Findings from this study revealed that socioeconomic factors were the strongest barriers to preventing illnesses, including T2DM in non-diabetic African American communities. Indeed, these factors have significant implications for nursing practice, education, and research as the nursing profession seeks to develop interventions that are specific to the needs of ethnic groups, nationally and globally.
