The mission of the Division of Tennessee State Parks is to preserve and protect unique examples of natural, cultural, and scenic areas through a well-planned and professionally managed system of state parks; however, little is known about the personnel who manage these resources nor the variables that influence the decision-making process.

520 $a The study investigated the cognitions, knowledge, perceptions, and professional norms affecting management strategies employed by Tennessee State Park Rangers and Park Managers while exploring other factors affecting mindful park management. Information obtained related to job duty prioritization; management strategy use and perceived effectiveness; and opinions towards and knowledge of these strategies. Persona! and professional values and beliefs, attitudes and behaviors, and organizational factors shed light on what they do and why they do it.
520 $a Results illustrate a disconnect between the persona! and professional tenets of Park Rangers and Park Managers; that professional acculturation has reduced optimum efficiency and effectiveness; and that politics affects the successful fulfillment of the Division's mission as much as a shortage of time and staff. Furthermore, findings depict inconsistent management strategy use, a need to increase officer knowledge, and a high burnout rate.
