This is a study of social changes and social relationship. Based on ethnographic data collected from a rural Chinese community (East Village), this study examines the social relationship between rural cadres and peasants under collectivism and its historical changes as the result of China's societal transformation.

Literature suggests that the rural cadre under collectivism has a dual status as both a State agent and a community member/leader. Previous studies on cadre-peasant relationship focus on the rural cadre as the State agent. This study proposes a conceptual framework---socialist rural clientelism---and approaches the issue with the emphasis that the rural cadre is first of all a member/leader in the community. Under this framework, the cadre-peasant relationship is perceived as a self-fulfilled clientelist relationship with the collective cadres as the patron and the peasants the clientele. Socialist rural clientelism as the dominant pattern of cadre-peasant power relationship is both a derivative of the socioeconomic structure of rural collectivism and a kind of cultural practice of a peasant society tradition crystalized as traditional rural clientelism.

Through the analysis of the changes in socioeconomic structure and cadre-peasant relationship in East Village, this study examines the foundation, mechanism, and dynamics of socialist rural clientelism, which went up with Mao's collectivization in 1950s and fell down with Deng's decollectivization in 1980s.
