The developmental processes of ethnic minority youth in America, particularly those processes related to healthy psychological adjustment, are not well understood. Although there is an abundance of research on adolescent development in the United States, most studies have not considered ethnicity as a factor in the developmental process. The period of adolescence is a critical time where individuals are searching to secure a stable and consistent identity.

Most Chinese American adolescents must negotiate three cultures: that of the dominant United States culture, the Chinese culture, and the values and norms of United States adolescents. While they encounter the normal developmental tasks of other adolescents in the U.S., they carry the added burden of integrating different and sometimes conflicting values of the Chinese and American culture.

The level of identification with one's culture and with the stress related to acculturation has been associated with self-esteem and social behaviors by researchers. It has been found that the embrace of ethnic identity is important in healthy adolescent functioning, as it is an integral component of self-concept. Failure to actively explore ethnic identity issues during adolescence may reduce one's self-understanding, increasing the risk of adjustment difficulties.

The availability of research on the development of Chinese American adolescents is limited. It is hoped that this review will be helpful to those who provide psychosocial services for Chinese American adolescents, including health practitioners, educators, and parents. The purpose of this review is to present information pertaining to ethnic identity development and acculturation in Chinese American adolescents. Issues related to ethnic identity, acculturation, and theories concerning saludogenesis were examined from a non-dominant culture, single race perspective. It emphasized that in addition to ethnic identity development and acculturation, social norms and values play integral roles in the psychological adjustment and well-being of ethnic minority youth. Finally, clinical implications and intervention recommendations were addressed.
