As in many western societies, poisonings (due to suicidal attempts, accidents or drug abuse) and injuries are the leading cause of deaths in subjects below the age of 45. Poisonings account for 5--7% for acute medical admissions and 1% pediatric admissions to hospitals. However, very little is known about the actual incidence and pattern of fatal drug abuse in Hong Kong. The research findings provided a better portrait of the drug-related death cases and a quantitative basis for reference in the formulation of relevant preventive education and publicity programmes to increase the awareness of the community to the dangers of drug abuse. Also, insight was gained as to how co-ordinate efforts among various the parties involved could be carried out, taking into account the characteristics identified in the study.

The thesis covered a study of all drug-related death cases during the 5-year period between January 1994 to December 1998. This involved the review of patients who died of overdose or poisoning with drugs (both drugs of abuse, particularly opiates or prescribed drugs) in the whole of Hong Kong. The source of information came from the computerised database of the Forensic Toxicology Section of the Government Laboratory as well as information from the Coroner's Office. Areas of information included demographics, region of residence, the type of drugs involved and their levels in the post-mortem blood, whether the individuals are undergoing any drug treatment programmes, and the cause of death.

In traumatic death cases, cause of death is not directly attributed to the toxicity or adverse effect of drug. However, the toxicology findings with positive drug result have been reviewed in order to understand better the scenario surrounding death in these cases such as fell from height, hanging and drowning.

Drug related sexual offences between 1994--1998 have also been studied. The major incapacitating agents were identified and some characteristic features of cases under this category were discussed.
