Due to a large extent to its strong folk tradition of carnival and its rich history in literature and music of a distinct colloquial flavor, the city of Cologne, Germany's metropolis on the Rhine River and its fourth-largest city, is often associated with its dialect, known throughout Germany as "Kolsch" and geographically designated as part of the Central Franconian dialect region. Developments affecting the use and presence of the Cologne Dialect in average daily communication, among them increased worker mobility brought about and necessitated by the industrial and technical revolution, the standardizing influence of the media, and an enormous influx of foreigners and people from German regions outside of Cologne, have contributed to the diminishment of the dialect as a form of communication used by people of all ages and social classes. As a result, the casual observer will hear to a much lesser degree the traditional city dialect on the streets of Cologne but rather a more regional variety dominated by elements of the standard language.

The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent this phenomenon is linked to generational differences in the ability to speak the Cologne dialect. Research in modern Dialectology has shown that the younger generations, living in a more standard language-friendly environment created by school and work, tend to use less dialect than their elderly counterparts and thus are negatively impacted in their ability to speak it. How different are the levels of dialect competence in the younger, middle, and older generations in Cologne?

To answer this question, the author recorded the speech of 58 people, each placed into one of three age groups, in February and March of 1999 in Cologne and performed a linguistic analysis by determining the degree to which certain aspects of the recorded speech were correctly spoken in dialect. The results showed high and similar levels of dialect competence in the middle and older age groups and much wider gaps between the middle and younger generations. Further surveys revealed that younger speakers are much more limiting in their use of dialect, thus reducing the exposure to "Kolsch" for the coming generations.
